MSPS Launches Sayuntis

by Jen Chavez ’15

November 29, 2011 – After receiving good reception during Mu Health Caravan legs, Sayuntis: Ang Sayaw ng mga Buntis, was launched as a stand-alone Mu service activity at the Obstetrics-Gynecology Clinic of the Out-Patient Department in Philippine General Hospital. While countless women wait for their turn to be attended to, they were engaged in an educating lecture and entertaining dance lesson that made their morning worthwhile.

The participants were welcomed by the event’s host, sis April Sales (µΣΦ ’15). After Service Committee Chairperson Marianne Naria (µΣΦ ’14) gave the opening remarks, sis Anna Patupat (µΣΦ ’14) provided a brief lecture about nutrition and exercise to expectant and experienced mothers. Stretching exercises were also taught by sis Jen Chavez (µΣΦ ’15) as a way to relieve stress.

Service Committee Chairperson Marianne Naria (µΣΦ ’14) gave the opening remarks for the first-ever Sayuntis held at the Obstetrics-Gynecology Clinic of the Out-Patient Department at the Philippine General Hospital.

Sis Anna Patupat (µΣΦ ’14) informed the audience about the importance of proper nutrition and exercise.

The participants were engaged in an active and fun-filled activity while they wait for their consultation.

Obstretician-Gynecologist Dra. Faye Cagayan (µΣΦ ’93) then spoke with the mothers about the benefits of exercise during pregnancy. With their hearts filled with excitement, and with belly-dancing belts around their waists, the participating moms, as led by Mu sisses Anj Carlos (µΣΦ ’15), Mel Caraan (µΣΦ ’15), Agnes Cubillas (µΣΦ ’15), and IC de Vera (µΣΦ ’15), moved their hips, arms and legs as they grooved to the beat of party music. Indeed, Sayuntis is not an ordinary exercise, it’s a free way to enjoy and have fun daily! The worthwhile morning ended with the participants receiving Sayuntis primers as well as snacks to power them up the rest of the day.

We would like to express our gratitude to Dra. Faye Cagayan, whose passion for making pregnant women healthy as they prepare for delivery, has inspired us to do this project, as well as Nurse Omay and the rest of the OB-Gyn Clinic of PGH-OPD for all their help and patience in making the first run of Sayuntis possible.
