MSP Gets Refresher Courses on DM and Abdominal Pain
by Lea Labayen '15
November 24 and 29, 2011 –Worldwide prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) has risen dramatically over the past decades. In the country, an
increasing number of patients seen in the medical missions have DM or illnesses resulting from DM complications. Aside from DM, common complaints of health-seeking Filipinos include abdominal pain, which may be a symptom associated with diseases of various etiologies, from an easy-to-manage gastrointestinal infections to cancerous growth on a pelvic organ. As part of the Mu Sigma Phi’s commitment to service and in line with the celebration of the Service Month, refresher courses about Diabetes Mellitus by Sis Mitos Cating-Cabral (µ∑Ф ‘01), a fellow in the Section of Endocrinology of the Department of Medicine in Philippine General Hospital, and Abdominal Pain by Brod Ruter Maralit (M∑Ф ’05), from the Department of Medicine, were held at Paz Mendoza last last November 24th and 29th, respectively.
The brods from the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity organized the refresher course on Abdominal Pain given by brod Ruter Maralit (MΣΦ ’05) of the Department of Medicine
With the undergraduate brods and sisses as well as the applicants from UP College of Medicine Class 2016 eager to learn, the lecture on Diabetes organized by the sisses tackled the risk factors, criteria for diagnosis, presenting signs and symptoms, complications, and management of Diabetes. Emphasis was made on identifying the risk factors of patients for primary prevention; catching initial signs and symptoms for secondary prevention; and teaching the patient about its complications for tertiary prevention. Equally important is patient education on the importance of lifestyle changes in the management of this metabolic disease. Sis Mitos made the lecture fun and interactive by handing out giveaways to those who answered her questions correctly.

Now, equipped with a better understanding and knowledge of Diabetes and abdominal pain, we hope to be more able to examine, diagnose, advice, and teach the patients during our hospital duties and health missions, so we can give a lasting positive impact against the progress and occurrence of diseases.
