MSPS Once Again Brought Joy to Young Cancer Patients

by Aca Almelor, Class 2016

November 25, 2011 – Once again, MUnting KaCIyahan, an annual storytelling event organized by the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority, brought joy and knowledge to the children admitted at UP PGH Cancer Institute Lobby.

To start the activity, Ella Cruz of Class 2016 led the Opening Prayer, while Service Committee Chairperson Marianne Naria (μΣΦ ‘14) gave the opening remarks. While waiting for the storytelling to begin, the children were entertained with parlor games, such as Bring Me. Winners, and non-winners alike, were awarded with an assortment of candy.

Service Committee Chairperson Marianne Naria (µΣΦ ’14) addressed the participants of this year’s Munting KaCIyahan.

Dominique Concepcion and Isabella Supnet of Class 2016 engaged children into fun-filled parlor games while waiting for the storytelling.

Class 2016 creatively presented the story of Gawad Panitikang Pangkalusugan’s, 5 Seconds Only, to an audience of forty cancer patients and their parents. Written by Hannah Lyn Creencia, 5 Seconds Only tells the story of Jenny, a little girl whose mistaken belief in the oft-repeated remark led to unfortunate consequences. The book imparts a lesson on the workings of the “microscopic” world and also teaches its young readers to not consume food that has fallen to unsanitary surfaces. The story was performed by students from the UP College of Medicine Class 2016. Isabella Supnet was both narrator and lead voice actor. Her fellow voice actor was Patricia Cruz. Michelle Miranda played Jenny, and Ella Cruz, her mom. Alyssa Almelor, Pamela Bayona, and Dominique Concepcion were the evil Gamma Germites, while Blessie Perez and Ann Ongbit took on the role of Jenny’s Bodily Resistance.

After the storytelling, sumptuous lunch was served while the audience was serenaded with songs like Saranggola ni Pepe and Pasko na Sinta Ko. The children were also provided with loot bags containing coloring books and crayons to tap the imagination and creativity of these children full of eagerness to live despite their condition.

Ann Ongbit and Blessie Perez did their best to protect the body against the micobes, but to no avail.

To end the activity. closing remarks was given by Alyssa Almelor of Class 2016. The event was graced by Dra. Tere Aspi (μΣΦ ‘11) and Dra. Raine Almelor (μΣΦ ‘07), along with other members of the sorority. Lunch and an assortment of toys were also given to the children at the Cancer Institute Pediatric Ward.

Everyone, from the participants to the organizers, had a grand time after the event.

The Mu Sigma Phi Sorority would like to thank the administrative staff of the Cancer Insitute in Philippine General Hospital for their help in making this activity successful.
