Mu Sigma Phi Sorority Breaks New Ground with ImMUnity

by Hanna Palomar ‘14

ImMUnity5

In view of its unrelenting devotion to health advocacy and community empowerment , the Mu Sigma Phi  Sorority conducted the 5th leg of its annual comprehensive immunization program entitled “ImMUnity: Be the Doctor, Not the Patient”. This project acknowledges the fundamental significance of immunization in the deterrence of diseases. It is a testament to the sorority’s utmost dedication to service as this project benefits health professionals and medical students who are constantly exposed to a number of preventable ailments.

Last June 15 – 18, the sorority administered free Trivalent Flu, Combined Hep A+B, TDap and Typhoid vaccines to around 300 students from the U.P. College of Medicine. Registration, Screening and Administration were held at the MSU 2nd floor and this successful endeavor was made possible with the synergistic efforts of  the undergraduate sisses and the very supportive alumni. Consultant and resident sisses namely Dr.Ida R. Sangalang–Tacata '75, Dr. Marilyn D. David–Ruaro '76,  Dr. Lilibeth S. Genuino '87, Dr. Stella H. Guerrero–Manalo '87, Dr. Dona S. Parala '87, Dr. Ma. Sonia S. Salamat '95, Dr. Ela C. Villaverde '06, Dr. Ma‐Am Joy R. Tumulak '07, Dr. Kathryn S. Ty '07, Dr. Iris Alessandra A. Samson–Pardo '08 and Dr. Maria Anna A. Morales '09 all helped in the administration of the vaccines.

ImMUnity started out as part of a series of activities initiated during the sorority’s 75th anniversary celebrations that focused on students’ health and wellness. The ImMUnity Lectures conducted earlier this school year were also part of the whole program that aims to inform the student populace on the importance of immunization and also to provide service and easy accessibility to some of the essential vaccines.
