The First Medical Sorority in the Philippines and in Asia

We are the MU SIGMA PHI SORORITY, Inc., an unbroken line of over a thousand lady doctors from the University of the Philippines Manila. We are duly recognized by our college and university, and registered under the Securities and Exchange Commission of the Philippines.

SISTERHOOD is the quality that distinguishes a sorority from other organizations, and so it is the women of the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority that sets it apart from all other sororities. We have, as our heritage, 75 years of women dedicated to our ideals and we count, among our ranks, a line of lady doctors dating back to 1934. As the first medical sorority in our university, in our country, and in Asia, we can count on the help and support of over a thousand qualified physicians from all the fields of medicine. Our membership spans our country's archipelago and crosses the seven seas. We have alumnae chapters within our country, as well as in the USA.

Our beginnings are humble, for it was on a Monday, the 27th of August in 1934, when seven members of the Ladies Auxiliary Committee of our fraternity counterpart (formed a year earlier) decided to forge a separate identity. They aimed to create an organization that is both uniquely responsive to their needs, abilities, and interests as young female physicians-in-the-making, as well as doctors in the service of their country.

30's 40's 50's 80's

Guided by the four pillars of SISTERHOOD, SERVICE, SCHOLARSHIP, and LEADERSHIP, the Sorority went on to carve a name for itself as a pioneer and trailblazer. Since 1942, the Mu Sigma Phi Drug Bank has been maintained to provide free medicine for the indigent patients of the Philippine General Hospital; as well as the Mu Sigma Phi Blood Bank, now known as the PGH Blood Bank, and the Mu Sigma Phi Eye Bank. We have weekly free clinics and circumcision sessions (surgical missions) in different barangays; in fact, the Sorority was able to serve 14,238 patients in the past year alone. We also keep the PGH Patient Assistance Fund, a project which aims to sponsor one patient in every PGH department every month. Our annual projects include the Parol Para Sa Sanggol supporting the PGH Pediatrics Ward and the MUla Sa Puso for the patients of the Medicine Ward. We also hold the Excellence, Knowledge, Genius (EKG) inter-college and -university pre-medical quiz show, and in collaboration with our brods, Brainstorm, an inter-university medical quiz show.

Sisterhood Service Scholarship Leadership

Our illustrious alumnae and solid list of accomplishments attest to our integrity and our responsiveness to the needs of our fellowmen. Our social, cultural, and scholastic reach has broadened through generations - a sure sign that our Sorority moves and grows with the times. Our ideals burn brightly ever even as we mark seven-and-a-half decades of glory!
