Mu Sigma Phi Advocates Healthy Lifestyle

By Reinzi Luz Bautista '13

Mother and child

The afternoon of September 20 turned into more than just a few hours of leisure for the shop-goers of SM Manila, as the mall’s central atrium turned into a venue of learning courtesy of the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority. As part of the women’s health and wellness campaign for its Diamond Anniversary, the sorority held a health lecture series directed at mothers and children. The event dubbed “Healthy Lifestyle” was a part of simultaneous lectures of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) in 25 different SM Malls around the country.

The emcees Nani Tumlos (µ∑Φ ’13) and Patricia Cielo (µ∑Φ ’12) enthusiastically started the program with an exchange of opinions on the importance of health and wellness especially in mothers and children. Audiences were then shown the sorority’s Brilyante AVP – a meaningful video presentation on the dangers of cervical cancer and the necessary steps to combat it. This paved way for the first speaker, Dr. Marylin David-Ruaro (µ∑Φ ’76), Chair of the Department of OB-Gyn of Manila Doctor’s Hospital, to lecture on topics such as breast cancer, aging, and lifestyle diseases. The second speaker, Dr. Cynthia Cuayo Juico (µ∑Φ ’76), Health Education Chair of PMA, then lectured on relevant pediatric issues such as infant and child nutrition, and proper child development and maturation. The seated audience listened on with interest, and even passersby stopped to pay attention to the many important subjects discussed. A quiz contest at the end of the program served as a review of the afternoon’s lectures, as well as an enjoyable culmination of the activity for the participants.

The activity is only one of many successes of the sorority’s scholarship and service pillars, and with the Diamond Anniversary celebration still underway, one can expect many more to come.
