The morning of May 14, 2016 was the day when all the stakeholders — the community, the barangay and municipal, and the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity — would gather in a plenary ceremony to inaugurate FLUSH and to once again declare our commitment to achieve zero open defecation in Sitio Kabuhuan, Barangay Puray. The government representatives and the Brothers of the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity, ready with the zeal of service, journeyed to Sitio Kabuhuan early morning to ready the community for the half day event.
The program started off with a situationer given by Gio Philip Dizon MΣΦ 2020 to share the story behind FLUSH and to orient the attendees to the activities for the day. In behalf of the Municipal Health Office, the Barangay Health Worker of Puray, Ms. Victoria Ocampo responded with a speech which highlighted the impact of FLUSH to the overall health of the residents of the sitio.
Two simultaneous health lectures on the importance of hygiene and sanitation followed. One was for the adults which tackled the importance and methods of hygiene and sanitation, including first aid for diarrhea and vomiting. The lecture consisted of a “Tama o Mali” portion to shed some light on misconceptions regarding s
anitation, a brief and informative lecture, and demonstration of handwashing and preparation of homemade oral rehydration solution. The other lecture for the kids emphasized the importance of handwashing. The lecture consisted of a story which introduced the children to microbes, a catchy song to help the kids remember the steps in proper handwashing, and an actual handwashing session.
The formalities of the event ended with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting on the first site where a toilet facility was being constructed. This toilet unit was assembled by the community members through collective action. Representing the Municipal Sanitation Office, Mr. Raya stressed the importance of partnerships in achieving zero open defecation. Lorenzo Maria De Guzman MΣΦ 2018, Bearer of the Staff of the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity, capped the program with a short message to remind everyone that this is just the beginning of the partnership.
The day ended with a simple salu-salo of pansit and iced tea which the community and the Brothers shared. With this, the process towards Fostering Long-term Unity towards Sanitation and Health in Sitio Kabuhuan has commenced.
