UP President Roman Backs 2nd QEFF Print E-mail
Written by AMICI

The highest ranking official of the University of the Philippines (UP) System calls on the entire UP community to support the 2nd Quisumbing-Escandor Film Festival for Health (QEFF). UP President Dr. Emerlinda Roman, on her memo dated March 1, 2009, encourages the members and constituents of the UP System to join the second staging of the QEFF.

UNVEILING QEFF 2. (L to R) Kalvina Adala ΜΣΦ 2012, Algene Agustin ΜΣΦ 2012, UP President Dr. Emerlinda Roman, Bryan Lim ΜΣΦ 2010, Dr. Rafael Bundoc ΜΣΦ 1986, Daniel Dellosa ΜΣΦ 2013, and Argie Dorado ΜΣΦ 2013

Dr. Emerlinda Roman was also instrumental to the success of the first QEFF as she was the Guest of Honor of  the awards night held in February 2008. Brod Bryan Lim ΜΣΦ 2010 then offered the first QEFF as the fraternity's gift to President Roman and to the entire UP System which at that time was launching its celebrations for its Centennial.

With the support of President Roman, the QEFF 2 hopes to attract more film makers hailing from the country's premiere state university. The UP is renowned internationally as a training ground, as well as a home to exceptional talents and personalities in the field of the arts, particularly for film. QEFF 2, that goes by the theme Sa Ngalan ng Ama, ng Anak, at ng Ina... to underscore the issues plaguing maternal and child health in the Philippines, employs separate AMATEUR and PROFESSIONAL categories to participants. This development hopes to draw a diverse and rich pool of UP (and non-UP) based film makers that can turn the fim tilt as heuristic and moving as its theme.

Film festival for health honors UP doctors

President Emerlinda R. Roman has called on the UP community to join the 2nd Quisumbing-Escandor Film Festival for Health (QEFF) of UP Manila, which will culminate in February 2010.

The contest is open to amateur film-makers of documentaries, short narratives, and experimental films following the theme of the QEFF’s second biennial, “Sa ngalan ng ama, ng anak, at ng ina….” The QEFF aims to highlight maternal and child health issues in our country, such as high mortality, poor hospital facilities, few health providers, the cost of medicine, the Reproductive Health Bill, and many others. President Roman invited filmmakers to depict these issues and the interplay between political, socio-economic, cultural, and other factors. “Capture them in film and let our people and our leaders awaken to some realities,” she said.

The festival is a tribute to Dr. Honorato L. Quisumbing and Dr. Juan B. Escandor of the UP College of Medicine whose lives exemplified the University of the Philippines’ and the medical profession’s ideal of service. Both doctors were killed on duty.

2nd Quisumbing-Escandor Film Festival for Health (QEFF) for 2010

The contest is open to documentaries, short narratives, and experimental films by amateur film-makers.

The festival is a tribute to Drs. Honorato L. Quisumbing and Juan B. Escandor of the UP College of Medicine whose lives exemplified UP’s and the medical profession’s ideal of service. Both were killed while on duty—Dr. Quisumbing, while serving at the Philippine General Hospital during World War II.; Dr. Escandor, while serving as a barrio doctor during martial law (he was accused of being a rebel sympathizer).

Theme: “Sa ngalan ng ama, ng anak, at ng ina…” It aims to put into the limelight maternal and child health issues in the country—high mortality, poor hospital facilities, few health providers, the cost of medicine, the Reproductive Health Bill, and many others. Depict these issues as they interplay with political, socio-economic, cultural, and other factors, capture them in film, and let our people and our leaders awaken to some realities.
