SPRAWL MMA Philippines in coordination with Mu Sigma Phi, Tau Gamma Phi, and Pediapharma’s Sportsade will hold the second installment of Sprawl and Brawl, an amateur mixed martial arts tournament on December 12, 2008 at 7:00 pm at the  UP Vanguard in UP Diliman, Quezon City.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) has arguably been one of the fastest growing if not the most thrilling sport to hit the country in years. The sport though has also been received by many, especially the unacquainted, with disdain for its brutal nature. Such cold reception may be attributed to the unsightly gashes a fighter may end up with or the shiver that comes with witnessing someone being rendered unconscious due to a hard hitting blow to the jaw. In truth however, statistics has made it clear as crystal that MMA has even lower injury rates than basketball, football, and especially boxing. This is most probably due to the intensive ground game involved, which surely lessens the trauma received by competitors as compared to those in other sports. In fact, a fighter may completely obliterate the opposition without inflicting as much as a scratch if he is that well-versed in the art of submission fighting and he opts solely for it during a fight.

Residents, Interns, clerk, and other undergraduate representatives from the Mu Sigma Phi will be the official medical team that will cover the entire event to ensure the safety of all the competitors. Since the event will be an amateur MMA tournament, all fighters will be required to wear headgear along with their open-handed MMA gloves.

Time and again, Mu Sigma Phi has been of great relevance not only in the college of medicine but also outside. It will become once more a source of guiding light as it safeguards the MMA event and its competitors.
