MU WEEK 2011: UNBOUND Print E-mail
Written by AMICI

mu_week_unbound.png

To be dedicated to self-denying service, to work for the well-being of others without hoping for returns; to hone in scholarship, and strive for no less than the best in whatever endeavor pursued; to thrust into leadership, and to challenge while others blindly accept; to dream while others are complacent, to do while others are still caught dreaming; to rest in a brotherhood and sisterhood that will never let you down: equal, unbiased, unprejudiced; to live on the edge. To be all this, and yet so much more, this is how to be a Mu.

And as everyone bears witness to our continual re-affirmation of our commitment to Brotherhood and Sisterhood, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service, the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity and Sorority celebrated Mu Week 2011 last August 13 to 19, 2011. First held in 1965 and going strong for 46 years, the Mu Week is our humble tribute to our respective Four Pillars.

The BHWs of GK Baseco were given a crash course on the use of the Snellen Chart and other visual screening examinations, care of the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity and PGH-SOJR.

The Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity, in cooperation with the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of the Philippine General Hospital, conducted a Visual Acuity (VA) screening program in the Gawad Kalinga Village located in Baseco, Manila.

This program was comprised of a training module for 15 Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) and pre-school teachers on visual acuity screening, held last August 6, 2011, followed by the actual VA screening in pediatric patients during the course of the week. A follow-up consultation and assessment was scheduled the Saturday after, August 13, in which close to 50 children were attended to by our Brods.

The Mu-GK Ophthalmologic Screening program was designed to identify patients who were at risk for eyesight problems. The Mu dcotors will return to GK Baseco this September to conduct full ophthalmologic examinations on patients who were discovered to have eye problems, as well as to prescribe the necessary modes of treatment for the residents of Baseco.

This undertaking was spearheaded by Dr. Kevin Panggat MΣΦ 2009, Ophthalmology resident at the SOJR-PGH, and Bearer of the Staff Marvin Masalunga MΣΦ 2014.
