August 14, 2009 - The Rock Gods descended Friday to bestow Fame at the East on Mu Sigma Phi’s ensembles Our Strong Band and MU Band, who won first and third place respectively in the annual Friday at the East (FATE) battle-of-the-bands competition hosted by the Medical Students’ Society (MSS). Just last year, Mu had an astounding finish, nearly sweeping all top three posts through performances of MU Band, Our Strong Band, and Glenn Tan’s Parokya ni Glenn Tan. Held traditionally at the BSLR-East, FATE had Fame at the East as its theme for 2009, with the six competing bands hauled from the different year levels and organizations of the UP College of Medicine taking up the heavy mantle of various music legends.
Our Strong Band took on The Village People of late 1970s fame, delivering a rock twist of their trademark disco hits such as YMCA and Macho Man for their first song. The band then went for Deadeye Dick’s New Age Girl as their second number, much to the delight of the screaming, dancing, and jumping crowd. MU Band, on the other hand, took on The Cardigans of early 1990s fame, claiming inspiration from “chicks who rock”. Quickly raising the standard, their first song-and-dance performance was Lovefool, followed by Katy Perry’s Hot N’ Cold. The robust presentations from both groups were well-received by the energetic crowd and all the more by the Mu resident and alumni brods and sisses who went all out in support, in encouragement, and in impassioned chants of “Mu! Mu! Mu!”.
The Mu Frat and Soro’s joint guest performance concluded the intense night of competition with their dynamic dance moves set to a medley of music sensations, from the Pussycat Dolls’ Buttons to the Wonder Girls’ Nobody. Mu’s undeniably compelling presence at FATE was a tremendous show of a well-rounded Brotherhood and Sisterhood that stands out even beyond academics: All for the glory of the Mu Sigma Phi!
