To the watchful eye, Manila of the present is a resplendent trove of cues and clues that point to the City’s magnificent roots – Old Manila at its finest. From then to now is a a delicate story of The Lady and the Gentleman amidst a bustling metropolis of Architecture, Romance, Education, Religion, and much more.
For its annual August festivities, the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity and Sorority, through MU Week 2009, commemorated the Timeless Glory of Old Manila – a sparkling toast to the Timeless Glory of Brotherhood and Sisterhood, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service!
MONDAYThe week of festivities began with the Opening Ceremonies of MUseo, the BSLR Lobby display carrying Mu Week’s theme of Old Manila. Dr. Orlino Talens, Dra. Zorayda Leopando, and Drs. Virgilio Genuino were guests of honor at the ribbon-cutting, which was well-attended by resident and alumni brods and sisses. From the BSLR, all proceeded to the Fiesta at the Hut where a sumptuous free lunch was served, complete with Filipino delicacies and overflowing traditional sorbetes. Many thanks to the Genuino Family for making the Fiesta possible!
TUESDAYThe Joint Splurge and Sizzle, a night of drink and dance held at Crobar, Malate, was a lively tribute to the newest Mu MDs of Class 2009! The first time in recent memory that a Splurge was held outside of Orchid, the beer and food were plenty, as were the MUs ready to paint the town red.
WEDNESDAYThe most venerable Pie-eating contest in the UP College of Medicine, It’s a Small Pie After All, had med students mouth-stuffing with YELLOWCAB’s mouth-watering slices. Hosts Francis Crisostomo ΜΣΦ 2011 and Ivan De Grano ΜΣΦ 2011 got the crowd cheering, with the Pie-eating contest’s trademark theme song playing merrily in the background. Edrie Alcanzare of 2011, perennial Pie-eating champion, took a bow this year, as 2013’s Eric Rivas chomped to the top position of the Men’s Division. Meanwhile, Ana Alidio, also of 2013, took home the title for the Women’s Division.
The Red Cross Basic Life Support Training Seminar was a welcome opportunity for the younger population of UPCM to be exposed to medical care in the emergency setting. Participants learned life-saving techniques first-hand from Red Cross representatives and were awarded certificates after the short course.
THURSDAYThe Lecture on Counterfeit Drugs and Pharmacovigilance, in cooperation with Astra Zeneca and through the efforts of Dr. Emmanuel Arca ΜΣΦ 2002, was an eye-opener on the national and international health situation regarding pharmaceuticals. Participants were made aware of the developing drug problems on the medical front and were given timely and practical tips on caution and safety regarding drug products. Dr. Armand Crisostomo ΜΣΦ 1981 also offered a refreshing perspective on vigilance for the PGH doctor. Expanded Medical Blue Books and free dinners were given out afterwards.
FRIDAYThe highly anticipated fashion event Brilyante: The Empowered Woman, was an immense success, as doctors, cancer patients and survivors, fashion icons, and an empowered public came together to celebrate women empowerment and support cervical cancer awareness. Congratulations to our Sisses of the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority for an outstanding event on your diamond year!
The ClubMed afterparty, also at the NBC tent, was a fitting end to the week’s festivities as brods and sisses of all generations raised their drinks to all things MU, 76 years and counting!
Congratulations to Mu Week Heads Algene Agustin ΜΣΦ 2012 and Nani Tumlos μΣΦ 2013 and to the different Mu Week Committees for a job well done! Many thanks to the participants and attendees! 'Til next year! All for the Glory of the Mu Sigma Phi! |

Mu Sigma Phi's number at the Tao Rin Pala 2009. Watch as the entire fraternity performs a "stomp" routine. Turn up the volume to hear a very familiar chant to the tune of LMFAO's sh*ts, err... Shots. |
