Borne out of tradition, Mu once again reigned supreme in what is undoubtedly one of the most memorable years of the fraternity.
The fiscal year started out smoothly with the successful staging of the Freshman Assistance Program that culminated with the equally productive Freshmen Orientation on June 1, 2006. This was followed by the well-attended Fraternity Orientation traditionally dubbed “That Ol’ Frat Feeling” last July 26, 2006 at Caliente Bar. The placed was filled to the rafters as undergrad and alumni brods kept pouring in to the delight of the guests of honor of that night, the freshman class of 2011.
August saw the unveiling of the newly renovated Anatomy Laboratory Complex complete with new air-conditioning units, negatoscopes, repainting job and the upgraded Osteology Room and Plastination Room. This major contribution to the college would not have been possible without the help of the Mu Sigma Phi Foundation led by Dr. Geraldine Gomez-Pinder. Meanwhile, Mu “scores a coup” after it obtained the exclusive rights to spearhead the renovation of the PGH Science Hall Stage and the modernization of its audio-visual ensemble. The planning and implementation are said to be underway. Excellence in academics seems to be commonplace this year as a good number of undergrad brods achieved the College Scholar status. Add to that, Dr. Rafael J. Consunji ’92 was chosen one of The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) on September 2006 for his pioneering work on the SafeKids Philippines program. He joins the ranks of numerous brods who have been previously awarded the same distinction. In the same light, Dr. Rafael C. Bundoc ’86 was awarded the prestigious Eisenhower Fellowship. As of press time, he is currently traveling across different states of USA where he gives lectures, attends symposia and tours hospitals.
And if that is not enough feathers on our caps, Dr. Carmelo A. Alfiler ’72 was reappointed Director of the Philippine General Hospital. His reappointment is fitting for the PGH Centennial in 2007 and the fraternity’s 75th Foundation Anniversary in 2008. His second term runs from 2007-2009.
The holiday season was an opportune time for merry-making as hordes of alumni brods attended the annual UPMAS homecoming last December 19, 2006. Their return to their Alma Mater was made special by the ‘Mu Gallery’ set up for them right smack at the headquarters, the Mu Hut. There they were entertained by younger brods who sold them Mu apparel (shirts, jackets, key chains, mugs, car stickers etc.) to capture the Mu spirit. Earlier that month, Mu Foundation president Sis Gerry Pinder paid a visit to the college where she was literally treated to a red-carpet welcome at the Mu Hut. The annual acquaintance party among brods and sisses was held on the same day in her honor.
The fraternity top-billed several major events of the year, the Tao Rin Pala being its latest patron. That night was witness to the dominance of the frat as more than 70 brods (alumni and undergrads) showed off their wares in a traditional dance number. Touted as one of the best finish of the year was the Mu Band which barged into the TRP band scene after winning in the Friday at the East (FATE) late August. The band, composed of a mixture of brods and sisses, showcased the group’s artistic and musical talents.
The fraternity is ecstatic for the entry of eleven new brods who form the Mu Sigma Phi Batch 2011 (see related article). A rousing welcome is set on their induction dubbed “ONSEssion” some time in July 2007.
Finally, this year’s extravaganza would be incomplete without the Most Outstanding Student Organization being conferred for the eight time last September. This feat was preceded by a glorious run from 1991 to 1995 when the fraternity received this honor five years in a row. This milestone was almost duplicated when the frat was recognized in 2003 and 2004.
As the fraternity enters another fiscal year, the new set of officers and brods are poised to make yet another strong run especially in anticipation of the 75th Foundation Anniversary in 2008. Together, we must work to bring glory to our beloved Mu Sigma Phi. All for the Glory! |
