When Mu Sigma Phi throws a party, everyone is welcome.
That was one of the main thrusts of this year’s Mu Week festivities, as the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity and Sorority hosted a week full of events geared towards sharing the Mu experience with all of UP Manila and PGH. Mu Week 2008 marked the buildup towards the 75th Anniversary culminating activities of the Fraternity, and the kickoff for the Sorority’s own Diamond celebrations.
The week opened on Monday morning with the Diamond Anniversary Mass at the Philippine General Hospital Chapel. The mass was celebrated by no less than His Eminence Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales. Refreshments were served afterwards at PGH Director Brod Mike Alfiler’s ΜΣΦ 1972 Boardroom. ![]() ![]() Archibishop Gaudencio Rosales Celebrates the Diamond Anniversary Mass (left); Batch 2013 neophytes ambush MU Week's Fiesta at the Hut. Tuesday’s main event was another Mu Week tradition—the Fiesta at the Hut. brods and sisses played host to the populace of the College of Medicine, serving free-flowing food and drinks to any and all passersby at the Mu Hut. ![]() (R) It's a small pie after all Pizza Eating Contest Womens' Division; (L) Students' Forum on Reproductive Health Bill The activities peaked mid-week, with back-to-back events filling the day. The “It’s a Small Pie After All!” pizza eating contest was the highlight of the lunch hour. Shortly after lunch, the Symposium on Reproductive Health was held at the CAS Little Theater in UP Manila. Brod Anthony Cordero ΜΣΦ 1992 (Director, Center for Gender and Women Studies), Rep. Liza Maza (Congress Sectoral Representative for GABRIELA), and Deputy House Majority Leader, Rep. Janette Garin (Congress Representative for the First District of Iloilo) spoke for the pro-reproductive health bill, while Rep. Liwayway Chato (Congress Represntative for the Lone District of Camarines Norte), Rep. Rufus Rodriguez (Congress Representative for the Second District of Cagayan De Oro), and Former Senator Francisco "Kit" Tatad (Representing the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines) spoke for the anti-reproductive health bill side. To cap off the busy Wednesday, the brods gathered at the PGH Science Hall for the Diamond Anniversary picture taking, followed by a post-photo-op splurge sponsored by Batch 1998 and the newest Mu doctors of Batch 2008.
Thursday was the day for innovation, as a completely new event made its debut—the “Fried Tapa Mu…Sweet!” tapsilog eating contest. The new event was received enthusiastically by the brods, who, in addition to repeatedly chanting the contest’s title, dubbed the bonus round (Brods’ Division) “Extra Rice, O Loyal Brods!”
To end the week on a high note, the Fraternity and Sorority gave
the UP Manila campus a grand blowout on Friday night. Mutiny!, a free
concert featuring Sandwich, was held at the CAS Little theater, and was
open to all students and staff of UP Manila. The festivities culminated
with ClubMed at Fluid Bar in Malate, where brods, sisses, and friends
of Mu partied the night away—a fitting finish to a week of festivities
for one and all.
